The institute is located in a Konkan region. Although, Konkan is an inaccessible and economically and educationally underdeveloped, it has rich resources and potential for growth and development. Especially, the region is known for world famous agricultural produce such as Alphanso mango, cashew, kokum, coconut, apricot etc. cultivation. In last 2/3 decades, there has been a large scale multi fruit plantation and horticulture is on the verge of tremendous growth that has been becoming the backbone of the economy of the region. The ever expanding horticulture in the region needs to be supported with good horticulture practice, training, processing, preservation and allied industries for value addition to this perishable agriculture produce. Moreover, agriculture has to be oriented as the industry by bringing in the skilled workforce as also the managers and entrepreneurs so as to explore its full potential both in terms of production and jobs. Owing to this background of the region and its developmental potential and therefore the skilled human resource needs, the college intends to offer vocational training programmes based on horticulture and processing industries so as meet the skilled workforce requirement by these ever expanding fields. Starting up a community linked college is first step towards meeting the skilled human resource crunch ever faced by the upcoming industry at one end and offering accessibility to a large number of individuals of the community of the region at low cost and high quality education locally, that would encompass both vocational skills development as well as traditional course work, there by providing opportunities to the learners to move directly to the employment sector or into the higher education sector at the other.

To push it further and strengthen and enhance the spectrum, the institute would offer further flexible and open education system which would also cater to community-based life-long learning needs; that would in turn lead to establishing a synergistic relationship between the community, college and the job market.
The institute, established in 2003, is located in rural, hilly and educationally backward region so notified by the central and state governments and has a standing of 17 years. It has been the prime objective of the institute to provide higher education to the students coming from weaker-socio-economically backward- sections of the society of the region and it is with this mission, the institute is functioning for last two decades.

The institute is housed in a sprawling campus of 5 acres in the nature’s lap surrounded by beautiful ambiance. The college is catering to the educational needs of the students coming from different strata of the society. At present, about 800 odd students are pursuing their education on this campus. More importantly, the students from socially disadvantages sections of the society such as SC, ST, OBC and Minorities constitute more than 50% of the student population.
